When a Volvo traveling west on the Chincoteague Causeway on Va. 175 swerved out of its lane and into the path of an approaching Ford Taurus just after 5 pm on April 4, 2011, the resulting head-on collision claimed the life of a driver and passenger and sent the other accident victims to a hospital with severe injuries.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, the men killed in the Taurus were brothers Robert Cherrix and Laurence Gordon Cherrix, who lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia (VA). The Volvo was being driven by California (CA) resident Ivan Klychnik, and Chincoteague woman Christina Gallagher was his passenger. Gallagher was not wearing a seat belt and got ejected from the car after impact.

A rash of bridge and tunnel accidents have struck eastern Virginia in the past few weeks. Drivers need to use caution on those passages, as their lanes tend to be narrower than on the rest of the roadway. This leaves little room for quickly correcting steering errors or recovering from distractions.

I offer my condolences to the friends and family members of the Cherrix brothers.

A Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling down Route 13 in Mefla, Virginia (VA), when the truck ran off the road, hit two telephone polls, slammed into two cars, and finally hit a building. The truck driver, a Mappsville, VA, resident, suffered injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment, according to WAVY.com.

What exactly caused the truck accident remains a mystery. Was the trucker distracted in some way? Was there a mechanical problem with the tractor trailer? The investigation is still ongoing.

One lane of Route 13 was shut down for several hours as crews repaired what was damaged. Reports estimate thousands of dollars’ worth of property damage resulted from the accident. Fortunately, no one was killed in the truck crash.

This wreck illustrates the immense damage that can be done when a truck is involved. That is why it is so important for truck companies to make sure their tractor-trailers and 18-wheelers are operating at an optimum level and truckers do not drive their trucks recklessly.

A two-year-old girl was hit and killed by a van in the Dreamland Trailer Park located in Accomack County, Virginia (VA).

The van was backing up when it hit the young girl, according to wtkr.com. The child was rush to the hospital but, tragically, she died of her injuries and was pronounced dead at Riverside Shore Memorial.

Many questions need to be answered about this accident. For example, how fast was the van backing up? Did the driver look back to make sure no one was around the vehicle?

My deepest condolences go out to the young child’s family. As a new mother, I would be completely devastated if I lost my child in a sudden accident. There are no words to truly express the pain of losing a child.

This accident illustrates how important it is to exercise extreme caution while backing up a large vehicle like a van. Your range of vision is more limited with this type of vehicle and backing up without making sure the surrounding area is clear is unwise and reckless.

A new report was released on Tuesday in response to the 2008 accident where a 40,000-pound tractor-trailer crashed through the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.  The tunnel and bridge network connects the Eastern Shore of Virginia (VA) to Hampton Roads.  A federal agency has made new bridge safety testing recommendations, reports The Baltimore Sun. 

The National Transportation Safety Board report found that voids in the concrete barriers left metal bars that fastened the barriers to the Bay Bridge’s deck susceptible to weathering. As a result of the weakened barriers, a truck driver plummeted about 30 feet into the bay, after attempting to avoid a head on collision with a Camaro that had crossed the center line.

Although Short’s truck was the first vehicle to crash through one of the safety barriers in the history of the bridge the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission needs to be responsible and proactive in correcting issues as the bridge ages.  I hope they take the proper safety measures to avoid such accidents in the future.
